Pilot privacy notice
Privacy at FairCommit
Effective August 26, 2026 · This notice covers the FairCommit pilot.
What FairCommit does
FairCommit gives programming students and instructors shared evidence about how an assignment was developed. Review Priority helps instructors decide what may need conversation or closer review. It is not proof of AI use or academic misconduct and never changes a grade automatically.
Information we collect
We collect account information, course and enrollment records, assignment submissions and acknowledgments, rubric grades and feedback, device and session status, GitHub repository and commit references, changed file paths, language, aggregate additions and deletions, and privacy-limited development activity metadata such as session boundaries, heartbeats, saves, edit-burst totals, build or test categories, focus changes, external file-change indicators, commits, annotations, and telemetry gaps.
Information we do not collect
FairCommit does not store source code, Git patches or blobs, AI prompts or responses, clipboard data, terminal commands or terminal output, keystrokes, or file contents. Student code remains in the private GitHub repository controlled by the participating institution.
How information is used and shared
Information is used to operate the class workflow, preserve submission evidence, calculate transparent Review Priority factors, support grading, secure the service, and diagnose problems. Students and authorized instructors see the same submission evidence and score explanations. FairCommit does not sell student information or use it for advertising.
Retention and deletion
Detailed development activity telemetry is scheduled for deletion after 12 months. Submission, grade, audit, and account records may be retained longer when the institution needs them for academic or security purposes. An institution or user may request access, correction, export, or deletion by emailing phewitt@lakelandcollege.edu. Some records may need to be preserved for legitimate academic, legal, or security obligations.
Security and service providers
FairCommit uses Vercel for hosting, Supabase for authentication and database services, GitHub for repositories, and an email delivery provider for authentication messages. Access is role- and organization-scoped. No internet service can guarantee absolute security, but the pilot minimizes collected data and keeps service credentials on server-side systems.
Student and institutional use
The initial pilot is limited to adults or controlled test accounts. An institution must authorize use and provide its required notices before FairCommit is used with minors. Questions or privacy requests should be sent to phewitt@lakelandcollege.edu.
